Zurzeit sprechen bereits viele von einem drohenden Handelskrieg. Daher ist es sinnvoll zu hinterfragen, was schlimmstenfalls passieren kann. Die einfache Botschaft lautet, dass Handelsgewinne hoch und Handelskriege teuer sind. So ist etwa ein Viertel des weltweiten Realeinkommens auf Handelsgewinne zurückzuführen. Außerdem würde ein Handelskrieg fast ein Viertel dieser Handelsgewinne zerstören und erheblichen Schaden anrichten.

Abstract

Motivated by current events, this article provides a brief overview of recent attempts to quantify the gains from trade and the costs of trade wars. The simple message is that trade generates large gains and trade wars entail large costs. Recent estimates suggest that the worldwide gains from trade amount to around a quarter of global real income and that a global trade war would destroy almost a quarter of these gains.
