In recent years it has become a tradition to dedicate one of the issues of the VLDB Journal to selected papers of the International Conference on Very Large Databases. This issue of the journal follows the 29th VLDB conference that was held in Berlin, Germany, 9-12 September 2003. The conference followed the vision of the VLDB Endowment to further broaden the scope of the journal by introducing three tracks of equal importance: core database technology, infrastructure for information systems, and industrial applications and experience.

The program included 84 papers in all three tracks out of 457 submissions by about 1000 authors. In terms of subject areas, 249 paper submissions were on core database technology (48 accepted), 162 on infrastructure for information systems (27 accepted), and 46 on industrial applications and experience (9 accepted). Papers were submitted from 38 countries. Extended versions of six selected papers are published in this special issue of the VLDB Journal....
