Abstract
Breast milk is more than a mixture of nutrients which is perfectly adapted to the needs of a baby. Its components interact and support each other to optimize its nutritional value. Thus breast milk supports the immunologic processes of the baby and also acts as a catalysator for gut maturization and bacterial colonization of the gut. Six months of exclusive breast milk feeding, followed by introduction of other nutrients – still continuing the breast feeding – are nowadays considered to build up a stable basis for regular child growth and development.
