Duodenal gangliocytic paraganglioma in a dog: an unusual cause for posthepatic obstructive jaundice
Abstract
Gangliocytic paraganglioma is a neoplasm with no reported cases in veterinary medicine and rarely described in humans that usually occurs in the second portion of the duodenum. The name is derived from its unique histologic features of carcinoid tumor, paraganglioma, and ganglioneuroma. We report on the clinical and cytohistological features of a duodenal gangliocytic paraganglioma in a miniature poodle dog with intestinal obstruction and severe jaundice. Upper gastrointestinal fibreoptic endoscopy was performed, and cytologic and histologic samples were obtained. Microscopically, a triphasic (epithelioid, spindle, and ganglion-like cells) neoplasm was observed. The dog died and was submitted to necropsy. Grossly, a firm mass was detected in the submucosa of the ampullary region and was associated with regional lymph node enlargement and obstruction of the major duodenal papilla. The present report is the first description of such tumor in animals, which has to be included in the differential diagnosis of intestinal obstructions and posthepatic jaundice in dogs.
