Commentary on transoral access for endoscopic thyroid resection

Dr. Witzel and associates report a new technique on endoscopic thyroidectomy via transoral approach. During the last years, modern and safe technologies have been proposed and applied in thyroid surgery. For example intraoperative neuromonitoring to prevent laryngeal nerve paralysis , early measurement of iPTH to avert symptomatic hypocalcemia , new devices for hemostasis and dissection to better control bleeding , and genetic screening with improvement of survival rate . The impact of these technologies on quality of thyroid surgery is remarkable .
Likewise endoscopic thyroid procedures gradually lead to a surgical progress improving the perioperative life quality: cervical minimally invasive mini-incision and video-assisted techniques ameliorated the postoperative course, and extracervical access achieved excellent cosmesis [6, 7, 8]. The total number of techniques published from 1997, including some variations, account for approximately 20 different approaches....
