Due to an unfortunate editorial typesetting error, one sentence under the heading Introduction was published incorrectly. The correct sentence is given here:

Sequences, or partial sequences, of the alleles S ₁ –S ₁₀ (=‘S ₂₅ ’) and S ₂₃ as well as ‘putative S ₁₀ ’ (=S ₂₄ ) have been published (Ushijima et al. 1998; Tamura et al. 2000; Channuntapipat et al. 2001, 2002; Ma and Oliveira 2001; López et al. 2004).

Also, another sentence under the heading Discussion was published incorrectly. The correct sentence is given here:

In addition, sequence comparisons confirmed the existence of four sets of synonymous alleles as already proposed by Ortega et al. (2005): S ₁ , S ₁₆ , and S ₁₇ ; S ₄ and S ₂₀ ; S ₅ and S ₁₅ ; and S ₁₃ and S ₁₉ . In the case of S ₁ and S ₁₆ , the corresponding S-RNases appeared to have quite distinct isoelectric points, and also in the case of S ₁₃ and S ₁₉ (Bošković et al. 2003).
