Thoracic disc herniation – a diagnostic challenge

Abstract

Thoracic disc herniation is rare. Pain is the most common initial symptom, followed by sensory disturbances and motor involvement. By the time of diagnosis, 90% of the patient have signs of spinal cord compression. A 42-year-old woman was operated on because of shoulder pain. During her stay in hospital, the patient first demonstrated uncharacteristic pain and after 2weeks an incomplete paraplegia caused by herniation of the T10/11 disc.

Zusammenfassung

Der thorakale Bandscheibenvorfall ist selten. Unspezifischer Schmerz ist das initiale Hauptsymptom, erst später kommt es zu sensorischen und motorischen Defiziten. Zum Diagnosezeitpunkt haben 90% der Patienten Zeichen der Rückenmarkkompression. Wir berichten über eine 42jährige Patientin, bei der eine Schulteroperation rechts durchgeführt wurde. Während des stationären Aufenthalts entwickelte die Patientin zunächst uncharakteristische Schmerzen im Bewegungsapparat und nach 2Wochen einen inkompletten Querschnitt, der durch einen Bandscheibenvorfall Th10/11 verursacht wurde.
