This book on the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of musculoskeletal system disorders is the second English edition, deriving from an authorized translation of the 4th German edition published and copyrighted 2015 by George Thieme Verlag. The English revision arrives many years after the first edition, and is therefore almost fully renewed.

The editors are Martin Vahlensieck, Professor of Radiology at the Medical University of Bonn (Germany) and Maximilian Reiser, Professor of Radiology and Dean of Medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (Germany).

The book consists of 16 chapters covering all the aspects and indications of MRI applied in various disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The first section is devoted to sequence acquisition and to several technical aspects of MR. The others chapters are focused on MR imaging in the various musculoskeletal system disorders. Each chapter has the same format, starting from the examination’s technique, followed by anatomy, with a deeper analysis of the most important features of the region of interest, and then focusing on pathology and pathophysiology of each disease, described since its clinical presentation.

Key features of this book are the more than 2,000 MR images of reference quality, helping the reader in identifying and delineating normal and pathological entities; in this context, advanced techniques such as MR neurography and myelography, diffusion imaging, quantitative MRI, and mDIXON are treated in a simple way, incorporating a wide knowledge of all the most important issues involved in the field. The discussion of possible errors in interpretation, the comparison of MR imaging with other modalities, and finally didactic tables expand and organize information either on technical or clinical issues, with main reference to differential diagnosis.

This book can definitely assist the radiologist in acquiring the most reliable and complete imaging information in the field. As MRI is actually a major diagnostic instrument in many of the musculoskeletal diseases, the reader may achieve a high degree of diagnostic certainty quickly and efficiently. Therefore this publication should be in the library of all radiological institutions, being the ideal practical helper to accompany the radiologist at the workstation on a daily basis. The book may result in being very useful also for students and residents, for orthopedics and rheumatologists, and for all other physicians interested in the musculoskeletal system.
