Am J Sports Med. (2019);47(13):3148-57

Two year postoperative clinical outcomes for 84 consecutive female patients (mean age 64.6 years, range 43 – 84 years; mean BMI 27.7, range 20- 40) treated by open repair for gluteal tendon tears were compared to the preoperative degree of fatty muscle infiltration. Patient symptoms had been present for a widely variable period: mean 3.4 years, range 0.5 – 20 years. Preoperative unilateral MRs of the affected hip were scored for fatty infiltration of the anterior, middle, and posterior thirds of the gluteus minimus and medius muscles independently by 2 musculoskeletal radiologist on a 4 point scale ( 0 - no fat, 1 - fatty streaks, 2 - % fat < % muscle, 3 - % fat = % muscle, and 4 - % fat > % muscle). These regional scores were then averaged to give a score for each muscle and for the...
