Naturwissenschaften – the long-standing official organ of the German Society of Natural Scientists and Physicians

Naturwissenschaften first appeared in 1913 and is now celebrating its 90th anniversary. In addition, it has also been the official journal of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte (German Society of Natural Scientists and Physicians, GDNAe) for the past 79 years, during which time it has been very closely associated with the society. Both partners can look back on a remarkable history, and each of them has played a significant role in the history of the natural sciences in Germany, a history that obviously also reflects the ups and downs of 20th-century German history.

The Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte was founded in 1822 by the natural philosopher and doctor Lorenz Oken (1779–1851), a close friend of Goethe's and Schelling's; the aim of the new society was to "maintain personal ties between natural scientists and physicians and to promote the natural sciences and medicine in areas of common interest".
