Search for the HyperCP event at the LHCb experiment

Article

Abstract

The HyperCP experiment reported on the observation of three events for the decay Σ+ + μ with nexpectedly narrow dimuon mass distribution, suggesting that the decay may proceed via a new intermediate state of mass 214.3 ± 0.5 MeV/c 2. In order to either confirm or refute such a new particle, we propose to search for the decay Σ+pX, Xμ + μ at the LHCb experiment at LHC. We firstly study the Σ+ production rate at 14TeV of center-of-mass-energy with the nominal luminosity, 2 fb−1 per year, of the LHCb experiment with the PYTHIA event generator, and the Σ+ production rate is about 4.37×1013 per year. By taking into account the angular distributions and momenta for the daughter particles from the decay Σ+pX, Xμ + μ for either pseudoscalar or axial-vector X particle, we estimate the acceptance for such a decay at the LHCb detector. We expect that a few hundred events per year for the decay Σ+pX, Xμ + μ can be reconstructed at the LHCb experiment.
