The Formation of Iron Oxide Fume

Abstract

Previous work on this subject is reviewed briefly. It is shown that the rate of vaporization of a metal increases linearly with increasing oxygen partial pressure of the atmosphere up to a limiting rate. An attempt is made to explain the role of carbon in steel in enhancing or hindering the formation of iron oxide fumes by the top- or bottom-blowing process.
