Summary

The problem of heat transfer occurring when a hot liquid passes in laminar flow from a hot into a cold tube is here reviewed and the solution extended to the case of finite transmissivity of the tube wall. Calculations have been carried out for three finite values of the dimensionless numberNu′=k′D/λ. The graphs thus obtained allow interpolation for all values ofNu′ from 0 to ∞. A simple method for calculating the totalNu for arbitrary cases is suggested. Finally some mathematical properties of the differential equations and the functions occurring in this problem and in the analogous problem of heat transfer in flow between parallel plates are summarized.
