Continental Permian carbonates of Western Europe and Northern Africa

Abstract

In the Permian system of Western Europe and Northern Africa, the distribution of carbonate deposits among the essentially detrital deposits is very limited. In some cases, however, carbonates are well developed. Pre-Permian palaeography shows two contrasting types: one characterized by a high carbonate content and another in which carbonates are rare. The distribution of the Permian carbonate deposits reflects these older conditions.
