Identifying sectarian content for Jewish Early Childhood educational programs

Abstract

This study identified appropriate sectarian content for Jewish Early Childhood education programs. Using a national sample of early childhood Jewish educators, a Delphi technique was used to identify specific elements of Jewish history and culture considered worthy to be taught to young Jewish children. Seven categories of study were identified: (1) Jewish tradition as expressed in Jewish literature beginning with the Bible and continuing to modern Jewish writings; (2) Jewish way of life (customs and commitments); (3) Hebrew language (written and spoken); (4) Israel as the Holy Land of Jewish tradition and as the modern state; (5) Jewish peoplehood, knowledge of its historic past, its present structure and a desire to identify oneself with its future; (6) Faith in God with the purpose of the betterment of the world and humanity; and (7) Jewish values and attitudes. These categories were validated through a review of the literature on the history of Jewish education and by a panel of experts in Jewish education. A discussion is presented of the content appropriate to young children within each of these categories.

Résumé

Cette étude a identifié des contenus pertinents aux programmes spécifiques d’éducation préscolaire juive. Un échantillon national d’éducateurs juifs a été choisi en utilisant des techniques Delphi, afin d’identifier des élément propres à l’histoire et à la culture judaïque considérées méritoires pour être apprises aux enfants juifs d’âge préscolaire. Sept catégories d’étude ont été identifiées: (1) la tradition juive telle qu’exprimée dans la littérature juive, en commençant par la Bible et en continuant par des textes modernes du judaïsme; (2) les formes de vie juive (coutumes et engagements); (3) langue hébraïque (écrite et parlée); (4) Israël en tant que Terre Sainte de la tradition juive et en tant qu’état moderne; (5) le peuple juif, connaissance de son passé historique, de sa présente structure et un désir de s’identifier avec son futur; (6) la Foi en Dieu, avec objectif du bien-être du monde et de l’humanité; (7) valeurs et attitudes juives. Ces catégories furept validées à travers une étude de documentation sur l’histoire de l’éducation juive et par l’entremise d’un panel d’experts dans la matière. Une discussion sur le contenu approprié pour les enfants préscolaires est présentée à l’intérieur de chacune de ces catégories.

Resumen

Este estudio identificó contenidos adecuados para programas específicos de educación prescolar judaica. Se usó una muestra nacional de educadores judíos, utilizando técnicas de Delphi para identificar elementos propios a la historia y a la cultura judaica que se consideren pertinentes para el nivel de aprendizaje de niños prescolares judíos. Se identificaron siete categorías de estudios: (1) tradición judía, comenzando con la Biblia y continuando con textos modernos del judaïsmo; (2) forma de vida judía (costumbres y responsabilidades); (3) idioma hebreo (escrito y hablado); (4) Israël como la Tierra Santa dentro de la tradición judía y como un Estado moderno; (5) el pueblo judío en tanto como el conocimiento de su pasado histórico, su estructura actual y el deseo de identificarse con su propio futuro; (6) Fe en Dios con el propósito del bienestar del mundo y de la humanidad; (7) valores y actitudes judías. Estas categorías fueron validadas a través de un estudio de documentación sobre la historia de la educación judía y por intermedio de un panel de expertos en la materia. Se presenta una discusión sobre el contenido apropiado para los prescolares dentro de cada una de estas categorías.
