A visit to a rural preschool in China

Abstract

During a visit to a rural kindergarten (preschool) in China, children were observed in activities that integrated their learning with the lives of their families and their village, focusing on different types of plants being grown and harvested in the fields. Although many aspects of the program do not meet standards used in developed countries, the ability of the teacher to plan and conduct large group activities was admirable and the children displayed many positive behaviors.

Résumé

Durant une visite à une maternelle rurale de Chine, les enfants ont été observés pendant des activités qui intégraient leur apprentissage avec les vies de leurs familles et de leur village, tout en mettant l’accent sur différents types de plantes cultivées dans les champs. Bien que plusieurs aspects du programme ne rejoignent pas les niveaux qui sont utilisés dans les pays industrialisés, l’habilité de l’enseignante pour planifier et pour mener des activités en grand groupe fut admirable et les enfants ont fait preuve de plusieurs comportements positifs.

Resumen

Durante una visita a un jardín infantil rural en China, los niños fueron observados a través de actividades que integraban sus aprendizajes con las vidas de sus familiares, de su pueblo, poniendo a la vez énfasis en diferentes tipos de plantas cultivadas en los campos. Aunque varios aspectos del programa no correspondían a los niveles utilizados en los países industrializados, la habilidad de la maestra para planificar y para realizar actividades de gran grupo fue admirable y los niños demonstraron diversas conductas positivas.

In October, 1989, the author (along with several other OMEP members) attended an International Symposium on Preschool Education at Nanjing Normal University in China. During the conference a group was taken to visit this rural kindergarten.
