Conclusion

Voices From The Lived World of Illness: Advanced Cancer has demonstrated its application in medical and community education. It has been well received at medical grand rounds and national conferences. It was the centerpiece of a program at the 2005 International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (Chicago, IL) and recipient of “Best Workshop in Communication in Cancer Care.” The film has also served as a “trigger video” for interactive discussions at community forums in New York, Boston and towns in Vermont.

It is our hope that by listening to the “voices” from the lived world of illness patients can become real time teachers for those of us who care for them. This can help to bridge the communication gap between physician and patient in the decision making process throughout the disease trajectory and, most importantly, at the end of life.
