Association tests and outdoor ecology education

Abstract

This paper deals with the analysis of written associative responses in the context of a week-long outdoor ecology education at a National Park (treatment). Firstly, 12–13 year old pupils were instructed to respond freely to two selected key words (“Environment” and “Conservation”) by listing all words that they associate with them. All observed associations were categorized into a preselected cluster of 8 (or 9) domains. Secondly, the same procedure was applied in a followup survey: For both key words, participation in the education programme influenced frequencies as well as the choice profiles themselves indicating an increase in positive emotional and conservational associations. Advantages and limitations of the method are discussed.

Résumé

La présente étude s’intéresse à des réponses associatives d’élèves des deux sexes en relation avec un enseignement extra-scolaire donné dans un parc National. Au total, 126 élèves des niveaux sixième et cinquième (12–13 ans) ont été pris en compte. Chaque élève devait réagir aux mots-clefs “ENVIRONNEMENT” et “PROTECTION DE LA NATURE”, en notant par écrit tous les mots lui venant à l’esprit par association.

Tous les concepts ont été finalement répartis dans un ventail de 8 domaines présélectionnés. Ce tri donne à priori une répartition différente pour les deux mots-clefs. D’autre part, sous l’influence d’un stage extra-scolaire d’une semaine, on observe un décalage dans la fréquence des mentions associatives. Les données ont été standardisées, et calculées sur la base des différences entre les matrices. Des utilisations de tests associatifs dans l’enseignement de la biologie sont évoquées.
