In deze beschouwing worden de resultaten besproken van het Benzoredux-onderzoek, een stapsgewijs interventieonderzoek gericht op het terugdringen van langdurig benzodiazepinegebruik in de huisartsenpraktijk.

Een minimale interventie met een stopbrief was de eerste stap. Na 3-6 maanden werd, als tweede stap, een door de huisarts begeleid dosisafbouwprogramma aangeboden. Beide interventies waren effectief. Na de stopbrief stopte 24% van de gebruikers tegen 12% van degenen die geen brief ontvingen. De dosisafbouw was succesvol voor 2 van de 3 deelnemers, maar slechts 17% van de gebruikers die niet stopten na de brief, wilde aan de dosisafbouw meedoen. Gedurende de follow-up van anderhalf jaar kreeg de helft van de gebruikers die konden stoppen – na de brief of na de dosisafbouw – geen enkel recept meer voor een benzodiazepine. Patiënten die terugvielen, gebruikten aan het einde van het onderzoek substantieel minder dan voorheen. Toevoeging van groepspsychotherapie aan de dosisafbouw had geen meerwaarde. Er werd géén toename van andere vormen van medische consumptie waargenomen. Beide interventies waren kosteneffectief en goed uitvoerbaar in de huisartsenpraktijk. Deze interventies worden in deze stapsgewijze vorm, of apart, aanbevolen voor de huisarts. Een praktische leidraad voor de uitvoering is in dit artikel opgenomen.
