Ouderen hebben over het algemeen weinig klachten over het functioneren van hun geheugen, ondanks dat ze een (lichte) achteruitgang ervaren ten opzichte van hoe het vroeger was.

Testonderzoek bevestigt dat geheugenprestaties negatief samenhangen met leeftijd. Deze leeftijdsverschillen in geheugenprestaties kunnen niet afdoende worden verklaard uit comorbiditeit, zoals diabetes of herhaalde narcoses. Tussen geheugenprestaties en klachten hierover is nauwelijks een samenhang gevonden. Dit betekent dat voorzichtigheid geboden is bij het stellen van diagnoses en behandelingen puur op basis van klachten. Hoewel ouderen die klagen over hun geheugen aangeven hier graag iets aan te willen doen, zijn hun klachten doorgaans niet ernstig genoeg om een geheugentraining te adviseren: de effecten wegen niet op tegen de te investeren tijd en moeite. Voor cognitief gestoorde ouderen zijn zowel de mogelijkheden voor geheugeninterventies als de effecten hiervan beperkt. Patiënten met klachten over het geheugen zijn het meest gebaat bij voorlichting over het geheugen in combinatie met aanmoediging van het gebruik van externe hulpmiddeltjes zoals een agenda.
