Abstract

Long-term efficacy of Regular therapy in ambulatory depressive patients

As a follow-up to our previous study on the effects of combining psychotherapy and antidepressants in the treatment of depression in ambulatory patients in the acute phase, we now focused on the effects of Regular therapy in the continuation phase (six months until one year after the start of the treatment) and follow-up phase (one year until two years after the start of the treatment). The Regular treatment consisted of pharmacotherapy and Short-term Psychodynamic Supportive Psychotherapy. The depressive symptoms of 29 recovered patients were assessed at several moments to determine whether or not a relapse or recurrence had occurred. For the continuation phase we found that women show a significantly higher relapse rate than men and that the relapse rate is high in comparison with other studies. However, the results for the follow-up phase are much more satisfactory: not one of the patients suffered a new depressive episode.
