Saber-toothed cats (Mammalia: Carnivora: Machairodontinae) from the late Cenozoic of Tadzhikistan

Abstract

Neogene and Quaternary localities in Tadzhikistan have yielded numerous remains of carnivores, in particular of machairodontines. The fossils include skulls, lower jaws with complete dentition, and postcranials. They are assigned to the generaMegantereon Croizet & Jobert 1828,Machairodus Kaup 1833,Homotherium Fabrini 1890, andHemimachairodus Koenigswald 1974. Members of these genera and their stratigraphical and geographical distributions are presented, and some aspects of machairodontine evolution are discussed.
