History and nomenclature of the Conocardioidea (Mollusca: Rostroconchia)

Abstract

In this nomenclatural-historical account of the genera of the Conocardioidea (Mollusca: Rostroconchia) several inconsistencies and errors in the taxonomy and nomenclature of the Conocardioidea are clarified.Cardium aliforme J. de C.Sowerby, 1827, is recognised as type species of the genusConocardium Bronn, 1835, according to the ICZN 4th edition. Based on subsequent incorrect spelling which is in prevailing use, the spellingC. aliforme takes precedence overC. alaeforme andC. aliformis. Further nomenclatural difficulties concerning the generaHippocardia Brown,Pleurorhynchus Phillips,Lichas Steininger andRhipidocardium Fischer are settled. All genus group names and all higher taxa of the Conocardioidea until 2003 are checked from a nomenclatural point of view. The order name Conocardioida is emended herein into Conocardiida as originally used byNeumayr and because it does not conform with Latin grammar.

Kurzfassung

In diesem nomenklaturisch-historischen Beitrag über Gattungen der Conocardioidea (Mollusca: Rostroconchia) werden Irrtümer und Unstimmigkeiten hinsichtlich der Taxonomie und Nomenklatur aufgeklärt und korrigiert. Gemäß den in 4. Auflage revidierten Regeln der ICZN wirdCardium aliforme J. de C.Sowerby, 1827 als Typusart der GattungConocardium Bronn, 1835 festgelegt. Auf Grund einer inkorrekten späteren Schreibweise, die sich in überwiegendem Gebrauch befindet, erhältC. aliforme Vorrang überC. alaeforme undC. aliformis. Weitere nomenklaturische Probleme bezüglich der GattungenHippocardia Brown,Pleurorhynchus Phillips,Lichas Steininger andRhipidocardium Fischer werden bereinigt. Sämtliche Namen der Gattungs-Gruppe sowie alle höheren Taxa der Conocardioidea bis 2003 werden auf ihre Gültigkeit hin überprüft. Der bisher verwendete Name der Ordnung Conocardioida wird hiermit in Conocardiida emendiert, wie ursprünglich vonNeumayr eingeführt und konform mit den Empfehlungen der ICZN zur Bildung von Namen entsprechend der lateinischen Grammatik.
