Summary

Atheroma in the aorta is most marked around the origins of the intercostal and lumbar arteries. These differ from the larger branches in forming right-angled junctions with the main trunk and their origins are therefore sites of increased strain due to (1) weakness of structure and (2) increased internal stress.
