Effect of preceding crops on yields of green mountain potatoes

Summary

The effect of preceding crops on yields of Green Mountain potatoes for the years 1930, 1933, and 1936 have been presented. It has been shown that preceding crops of rutabagas, millet, alsike clover, and red clover quite consistently decreased yields whereas onions, oats, winter rye, redtop, and squash increased the yields of a following crop of potatoes. The results obtained with the clovers are substantiated by data obtained from leguminous and non-leguminous rotations. The deleterious or beneficial effect was evident when certain crops were grown one year on the potato plat. This effect may be carried over into a second year.
