Summary

The technique, indications, contraindications, efficacy, side-effects and advantages of single dose intravenous and intramuscular iron-dextran therapy in treating ion deficiency anaemia are outlined and discussed. The total requirement of iron has been found to be 25–33% more than the usually recommended dose. Factois determinign response to massive iron therapy are briefly outlined. Delay in response was more likely in cases with high initial hemoglobin (over 8 G.%), nearly normal serum iron, plasma proteins below 5 G.% and sometimes major infections and associated megaloblastic anemia. Delayed rise to begin with was commoner with intramuscular therapy. However, the ultimate results were about the same with both methods. Both methods are practical, safe and effective.
