Abstract
The influence of strain rate on the mechanical behavior of 99.9 pct pure, fully recrystallized tantalum is examined. Stress-strain curves in tension are obtained from strain rates of 10−5 to almost 104 sec−1. The rate dependence of the upper and lower yield stresses is closely predicted by the Johnston-Gilman model. However, the model does not adequately describe the postyield hardening behavior of the metal.
