Structural bonds of sandy non-cohesive soils

Abstract

Sandy non-cohesive soils are widespread in the territory of the USSR and cannot be considered loose or non-cohesive in their natural occurence; they possess quite measurable strength of structural bonds. Comparison and generalization of the experience of Soviet and foreign investigators of examples of morphological study of sandy norcohesive rocks of a different genesis showed their possible universal systematization by a morphological feature. Morphology of sandy particles is considered as a more stable, distinctly expressed genetic feature and important element of rock structure effecting a number of engineering-geological properties. There are given laws of variation of the above mentioned parameters in accord with an established morphogenetic gradation and probable precision on this basis of a genetic relation of sand by a set of parameters. The paper is based upon the main statements of the Soviet genetic soil mechanics and modern presentation of physicochemical mechanics. It has been proved with the aid of complete classification indices that non-cohesive sandy soils possess different types of structural bonds and therefore different strength and deformation characteristics.

Liaisons de structure de sables non cohesifs

Résumé

Ces sables sont largement répandus en URSS et ne peuvent être considérés comme des matériaux meubles dans leurs gisements; ils possèdent une résistance mesurable due aux liaisons de structure. Des recherches effectuées en URSS et à l'étranger sur la morphologie de tels sables de différentes origines montrent qu'une classification universelle est possible à partir de leurs caractères morphologiques qui affectent de nombreuses propriétés géotechniques. Des règles sont données montrant l'influence des caractéristiques morphogénétiques des grains sur la résistance des sables.
