Van der Waals attraction between vortices in HTSC

In anisotropic/layered superconductors the interaction between vortex segments directed along theab-planes is of longer range than that between the segments directed along thec-axis. This is a consequence of the anisotropic screening properties, with currents flowing along thec-axis being screened on the scale λ/ε, whereas the currents flowing along theab-plane involve the planar Londen length λ (ε2 =m/M≪1 denotes the anisotropy parameter). We show that, as a result of these anisotropic screening properties, thermal fluctuations of the flux-lines produce an attractive “van der Waals”-type potentialV vdW between the vortices.
