Stratospheric ozone descent into the troposphere: Case studies

Summary

The penetration of stratospheric air into the troposphere, revealed by high ozone concentrations measured both by an aircraft (Electra) and at a mountain station (Mt. Cimone) during a lee cyclogenesis event (April 24–25, 1982), is investigated. A detailed analysis of the meteorological fields and the application of the isentropic-trajectory method allowed us to reveal the dynamical processes responsible for the ozone transport into the troposphere. We show that the two episodes of high ozone concentrations have to be attributed to the evolution of two distinct upper vortexes, only one of which was associated with surface lee cyclone development.

Riassunto

Alte concentrazioni di ozono, misurate in troposfera durante un evento di ciclogenesi (24–25 aprile 1982) sia da aereo (Electra) sia in una stazione di alta montagna (Mt. Cimone), sono state messe in relazione con la penetrazione di aria stratosferica in troposfera. Una dettagliata analisi dei campi meteorologici e l'applicazione del metodo delle traiettorie isentropiche ha permesso di mettere in evidenza i processi dinamici responsabili del trasporto di ozono in troposfera. Si dimostra che i due picchi di ozono misurati in troposfera sono da attribuirsi all'evoluzione di due distinti vortici nell'alta troposfera dei quali solo uno è associato allo sviluppo dell'evento di ciclogenesi in superficie.

Исследуется проникновение стратисферного воэдуха в тропосферу, обнаруженное по высоким конциям оэона, которые были иэмерены с помошью самолета и на горной стнции. Подробный аналиэ метереологических полей и применение метода изоэнтропических траекторий позволяют нам определить динамические процессы, ответственные за перенос оэона в тропсфру. Мы показываем, что два случая высоких концентраций озона должны быть пиписаны к передвижению двух отдельных вихрей, один из которых был связан с поверхностым циклническм событием.
