The effectiveness ofBacillus thuringiensis formulations for the control of larvae ofSchizura concinna onCercis occidentalis trees in California

Abstract

Five commercial formulations ofBacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) were found to be effective for control of larvae of the red-humped caterpillar,Schizura concinna (Smith & Abbot), an important defoliator of broad-leaved trees in California. The formulations tested were Biotrol® BTB 183 25 W, Biotrol® XK, Dipel®, Thuricide® HPC, and Thuricide® 90TS 950T. As a result of these trials,B. thuringiensis replaced chemical insecticides for the control of this pest in 1970, and has provided effective control as part of an operational pest management programme for four years.

Cinq préparations commerciales deB. thuringiensis se sont révélées efficaces pour la lutte contre les chenilles deSchizura concinna (Smith & Abbot), important défoliateur d'arbres à larges feuilles en Californie. Les formulations expérimentées furent le Biotrol BTB 183 25 W, le Biotrol XK, le Dipel, le Thuricide HPC et le Thuricide 90 TS 950 T. A la suite de ces essais,Bacillus thuringiensis a remplacé les insecticides chimiques en 1970 pour la lutte contre ce ravageur; il a donné des résultats satisfaisants dans le cadre d'un programme de lutte pendant 4 ans.
