Samenvatting

De kruidentherapie wordt als alternatieve geneeskundige praktijk de laatste jaren in toenemende mate beoefend. Een groot deel van het Nederlandse publiek stelt er prijs op te worden voorgelicht alvorens een natuurgeneeskundige te bezoeken. Arts en apotheker met een taak in de eerstelijnsgezondheidszorg zullen op deze groeiende behoefte van de patiënt op adequate wijze moeten inspelen. Het gebruik van kruidengeneesmiddeien is gebaseerd op een langdurige empirische ervaring van werkzaamheid bij mensen.

Er zijn vvetenschappelijke gronden aanwezig om de vraag naar de werkzaamheid vooral te beantwoorden door onderzoekingen op het niveau van chemische en biologische interacties van de natuurstoffen welke in kruidengeneesmiddeien aanwezig zijn. Daarbij zullen in de eerste plaats algemene farmacologische screenmethoden, zoals de ‘hippocratische screen’ vanMalone (1977) en verbeterde klinische methoden gebruikt en ontwikkeld moeten worden.

De kwaliteit van geneeskruiden en nun bereidingen dient te worden gebaseerd op biosystematische en chemische criteria in een rechtstreeks verband met de werkzaamheid en de therapeutische toepassing. Kwaliteitsnormen kunnen in termen van gekwantificeerde chromatografische ‘fingerprints’ van voor de werkzaamheid relevante inhoudstoffen worden ontworpen.

Abstract

Phytotherapy as an alternative medical system is increasingly practised in recent years. A great part of the Dutch population demands to be informed by their physician before consulting a herbalist. Physicians and pharmacists with their important task in public health care should respond adequately to this growing need. The use of phytotherapeutics is based on a long standing empirical knowledge of their efficacy in man.

As for the experimental assessment of the efficacy it can scientifically be argued that solutions will be found by investigating the chemical and biological interactions of natural compounds occurring in phytotherapeutics. The use and development of general pharmacological screening methods like the so-called ‘hippocratic screen’ of Malone (1977) and improved clinical methods will be of particular importance. The quality of crude drugs and their preparations are to be based on biosystematic and chemical criteria in a straight correlation with the efficacy and the therapeutic use. Quality standards in terms of quantified Chromatographie ‘fingerprints’ of those constituents relevant for the efficacy can be elaborated.
