Sample distribution in the TLC layer

Conclusions

For normal TLC technique and the type of solvents specified: a fairly consistent pattern for sample distribution in the spot layer has been found regardless of differences in Rf value and chemical constitution. This pattern would only appear to begin to break down with gross overloads. Increasing spot loads produced increasing spot areas, the % distribution from top to bottom of the layer remaining constant. A heavy sample concentration at the surface of the layer has been found, the remaining (major) part of the layer showing a sharp drop and only gradual tailing off to the bottom.
