The growth of bream (Abramis brama L.) in relation to habitat and population density

Summary

Some properties of five bream populations and their habitats have been studied. A number of preliminary results are discussed.

  1. 1.

    Bream population densities stabilize at a certain level, depending on habitat properties.

  2. 2.

    The growth rate of bream is to a large extent conditioned by the relative availability of zoobenthos.

  3. 3.

    Poorly grown bream can raise their growth rate considerably when brought under favourable feeding conditions.

  4. 4.

    Hard water and a clayey bottom seem to be favourable for the development of high standing crops of chironomid larvae and oligochaetes.
