Serological studies with peste des petits ruminants and rinderpest viruses in Nigeria

Summary

One hundred and ninety-five goat and 67 sheep sera collected from various parts of southern Nigeria were screened for neutralising antibodies to both the peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and rinderpest viruses. Neutralising antibodies against both viruses were found in the sheep and goat sera examined. Parallel titration of samples which neutralised both viruses indicated a primary infection with the PPR virus (PPRV). However, some samples which failed to neutralise PPRV neutralised the rinderpest virus (RV) indicating RV activity in sheep and goats in Nigeria. These findings are discussed in relation to the diagnosis of PPRV infection and the recent reappearance of bovine rinderpest in Nigeria.

Résumé

Les sérums de 195 chèvres et 67 moutons, prélevés en divers points du Nigéria du sud, ont été examinés en sérologie pour la recherche des anticorps neutralisant les virus de la peste des petits ruminants (PPR) et la peste bovine (PB). Ces anticorps ont été trouvés dans les sérums des chèvres et des moutons observés. Un titrage parallèle des échantillons qui neutralisaient les deux virus a indiqué une infection primaire avec le virus PPR. Cependant, quelques échantillons qui ne neutralisaient pas le virus PPR ont neutralisé le virus PB, indiquant une activité de ce dernier chez les chèvres et moutons du Nigéria. Ces observations sont discutées en relation avec le diagnostic de la PPR et la réapparition récente de la peste bovine en Nigéria.

Estudios Serologicos Con Virus De La Peste De Pequeños Rumiantes Y Rinderpest En Nigeria

Resumen

Se colectaron 195 sueros de cabras y 67 de ovejas en varias partes del Sudeste de Nigeria. Estos fueron analizados, para detectar la presencia de anticuerpos neutralizantes de ambas enfermedades, los cuales se encontraron en todos los sueros examinados. La titulación paralela de las muestras, la cual neutralizó ambos virus, mostró una infección primaria con el virus de la peste de pequeños rumiantes, sin embargo, algunas de las muestras que no neutralizaron el virus de la peste de pequeños rumiantes, neutralizaron el virus de rinderpest, evidenciando así la actividad del mismo en ovejas y cabras en Nigeria. Los resultados se discuten, en relación con el diagnóstico del virus de la peste de pequeños rumiantes y la reciente aparición de rinderpest bovino en el país.
