In order to confirm the participation of a central cholinergic system in the control of hypophysial folliculotrophin release, implants of atropine (250 micrograms) were performed in different hypothalamic areas.
In hemicastrated animals, the ovarian compensatory hypertrophy was prevented by the drug without disturbance in the estrous cycle.
In contrast, in intact animals, prolonged diestrus was observed, with a decrease in the ovarian weight.
These effects, induced by pharmacological blockade, confirm the participation of a central cholinergic system in the control of hypophysial gonadotrophin release.
