Article

Summary

Good results were obtained with medical management in a group of patients with severe obstruction of the stomach due to duodenal ulcer. The success of the medical approach outlined suggests the following conclusions:
  1. 1

An intensive trial of medical treatment is indicated for all patients with obstruction due to ulcer.

  2. 2

Recurrence of adequately managed obstruction is not frequent; 75 per cent of the patients had no recurrence in the average follow-up period of 56 months.

  3. 3

A recurrent episode of obstruction may respond to further medical treatment.
