Summary and conclusions

In a study of gastric freezing in 188 outpatients, placebo response was as good as response to the the treatment itself, nor were results improved by addition of a modified and simplified postfreeze medical program.

Although gastric freezing does seem to have a desirable physiologic effect on ulcer patients with respect to pain relief and transient depression of gastric acidity, in our expeirence these effects are too brief to be therapeutically useful.

Attempts to prolong such desirable secretory alterations by the use of anticholinergic drugs and antacids were unsuccessful.
