The design and testing, during this study, of several instruments for collecting cells, led to the development of a device that is easy to use, causes little discomfort to the patient, and obtains excellent cellular material.

Of the unequivocal cytologic diagnoses made in cases in which histopathologic confirmation is available, an accuracy of 80 per cent was obtained, and if cases without tissue diagnosis are included an accuracy of 89.9 per cent is reported.
