Relationship between the atmospherics pulse rate in the 10 and 27 kHz range, air mass movements and the diffusion time of ions in gelatin films

Continuous recordings of natural atmospherics at frequencies of 10 and 27 kHz, respectively, were compared with the daily weather reports of the German Weather Service. The results confirm the well-known relationship with 10 kHz atmospherics predominating when mainly horizontal air mass movements with horizontal boundary layers occur, whereas 27 kHz atmospherics are closely related to vertical air mass movements with vertical boundary layers. This is in good agreement with the observation of a period of about ten years that (a) the diffusion times of ions in gelatin films are considerably shorter in winter as compared with summer, (b) a cold air mass in summer reduces the diffusion time to winter values and (c) a warm air mass in winter increases the diffusion time to summer values.
