Osteonecrosis — A new dimension in degenerative arthropathy

Conclusions

The study of osteonecrosis provides an exciting bridge between clinical orthopaedics, general metabolic abnormalities and basic science. Newer morphologic techniques (Steele et al., in press) correlate well with both clinical radiography and radionuclide scintimetry, and experimental studies of fat embolism (Jones andSakovich, 1966) have elucidated clinical observations in conditions associated with osteonecrosis. Further progress along these lines may well lead to prevention of osteonecrosis and therefore arthrosis; already at this time early diagnosis with the aid of radionuclide scintimetry provides opportunities for therapy before morphological changes have appeared.
