Summary

In thePelargonium region of Lent in the Netherlands heavy losses of cuttings and plants are due to a basal stem rot. These losses can be prevented by improved cultural methods. Cuttings are to be rooted after treatment with α-naphthaleneacetic (NAA) 0,1% in powdered charcoal in light soil. Watering of these succulent plants must be limited during the whole growing period. However, for these plants which are sensitive to salt, limited water supply may lead to excessive salt concentrations due to water ascending from the subsoil. This problem and the problem of temporary water annoyance can be solved by draining and washing out of the soil.
