Regional Effects of Economic Policy

Abstract

The aim of this paper, other than providing a conceptual framework for the classification and analysis of various types of policies, is to clarify the effects of such policies upon regional economies and to illustrate their impact by examining the experience of some European countries (on the basis of the results of research recently carried out). The analysis begins with the formulation of a conceptual scheme which makes a distinction between three types of policies: local, national, and supranational. Then, after a discussion about the “regional problem” and the need for a regional policy, a review of recent research on the evaluation of regional policy in European countries follows. Next, the various types of national economic policies are examined, the causes for their regional impact are identified and some examples are provided concerning fiscal, monetary, exchange-rate, and industrial policies. Finally, we draw some conclusions; a few suggestions for further research in this field are also given.
