Summary
The influence of magnesium on aldosterone secretion was studied in magnesium-deficient dogs. During development of magnesium-deficiency a transient rise of aldosterone secretion occured after 35–50 days on magnesium-deficient diet which returned to control levels despite further diminished magnesium intake. The elevation of aldosterone-secretion-rates was paralleled by a depression of plasmapotassium, it was not accompanied by stimulation of the renin-angiotensin system. Isolated elevation of magnesium-concentration in adrenal blood supply of more than 30–50% of control levels resulted in a marked depression of aldosterone concentration in adrenal venous blood without a similar influence on corticosterone concentration.
