Synovial sarcoma arising in the knee. Pitfalls in the diagnosis and management

Bearing in mind the degree of the rarity of synovial sarcoma of the knee as well as its significant morbidity and mortality especially for a young patient, the early and clear diagnosis is extremely important. A young patient with typical lateral compartment knee pain is presented. He was admitted with the provisional diagnosis of lateral meniscus tear. The final postoperative diagnosis was synovial sarcoma. The patient was referred to an Oncology Department for further management-treatment.

Sometimes the innocent benign morphology of a lesion in the synovium even if it is close to a trauma location as a small tear in the meniscus of the knee, may hide future problems for the patient as well for the surgeon.
