Abstract

On the basis of concepts of microalloying as a method of selective and controlled introduction of alloy elements providing a directed change in the physicochemical condition of internal and external interfaces, the possibility is shown of the optimum selection of alloy elements for the purpose of increasing the brittle fracture resistance of alloys. Criteria of selection of alloy elements are determined and a hypothesis is advanced of the nature of the influence of the change in surface energy on the brittleness of alloys taking into consideration the fact that on the microstructural level the change in surface energy is insignificant in comparison with the work of plastic deformation in formation and development of a crack in a constructional material. The possibility is shown of the practical use of the thermodynamics of three component systems in the Guttman concept for evaluation of the effects of mutual influence of surface-active elements in microalloying.
