Summary

Mineral deposits have been found in the cell walls of two newly described green algae,Siderocelis minor Crawford andScenedesmus granulatus West et West f.salina Crawford. A morphological account using transmission electron microscopy coupled with X-ray micro-analysis has shown that the deposits consist chiefly of iron and manganese though other elements were also found. Several possible explanations have been suggested for the variation in iron/manganese ratio—the ecological conditions pertaining in the natural habitat being considered particularly relevant.
