Circumventing visual limitations in teaching the geometry of shapes

Abstract

This paper discusses the limitations of visual perceptions in the formation of geometric meaning. Haptic exploration, which is the intentional movements of one's hands about an object, is proposed as an alternative approach for the teaching of geometric shapes. Haptic exploration strategies are addressed in relation to the development of geometric thought and also as a contribution to an activity-based learning environment. Results are presented from a study, that implemented this approach in lower secondary school mathematics classes in Greece, Scotland and the U.S.
