Characterization of avian reovirus ribonucleic acid

Summary
Double-stranded ribonucleic acid (dsRNA) isolated from avian reovirus was separated into ten segments by means of electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gels. The fractionation pattern obtained for avian reovirus RNA was not identical with that of reovirus type 3. The molecular weight of these segments was estimated on the basis of the distance of mobility using RNA from reovirus type 3 as a standard and varied from 2.42 × 106 to 0.64 × 106 daltons with a total molecular weight estimate of about 14.06 × 106 for the viral RNA.
Hybridization was examined with labeled single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) from cells infected with avian reovirus and denatured dsRNA from reovirus type 3 and cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV). A small amount of hydridization was found between ssRNA derived from avian reovirus infected cells and reovirus type 3 dsRNA, whereas no hybridization was obtained between ssRNA from avian reovirus infected cells and CPV dsRNA.
