Conclusions

  1. 1.

    Magnesium in aqueous solutions reduces bicarbonate ion to formate ion, formaldehyde, methanol, and methane.

     
  2. 2.

    It is postulated that a multielectron reduction system is needed for the specific reduction of CO2 to formaldehyde.
